Sora Is Gone. Deepfake Video Risk Isn’t. Here’s Why.

OpenAI’s decision to shut down the Sora social video app is getting a lot of attention and understandably so. The app went viral as a place to share AI-generated short-form videos, while also raising concerns about deepfakes and synthetic “AI slop.”

But here’s the uncomfortable reality: Sora’s retirement does not mean deepfake video threats will ratchet down. If anything, it’s the opposite.

Deepfake generation tools have already spread across the landscape. As the technology becomes cheaper and more accessible, synthetic video is increasingly used for fraud, impersonation, misinformation, and reputation attacks.

Why Sora’s closure doesn’t reduce deepfake risk

1) The capability has already escaped into the broader ecosystem

Sora may be offline as a social app, but the underlying reality is that AI video creation is now widely available through multiple tools, vendors, and open ecosystems. Once a capability becomes commoditized, removing one distribution channel doesn’t remove the capability.

3) “Distribution” is decentralized now

Even if one platform tightens controls, the same content can travel through:

  • messaging apps and group chats
  • reposting and re-uploads
  • anonymous accounts
  • screen recordings and “replay attacks”

A deepfake doesn’t need millions of views to do damage. Sometimes it only needs one person—in finance, HR, legal, or claims—to believe it.

The best defense is layered: prevention + detection + response

  • require secondary verification for high-risk actions (wire transfers, vendor changes)

This is where organizations are increasingly adding deepfake and media integrity screening at the point of intake, before a suspicious video becomes a payout, a payment, a hiring decision, or a headline.

3) Response playbooks

When a deepfake appears, organizations should already know:

  • who investigates
  • how evidence is preserved
  • what escalation looks like
  • how to communicate externally if needed
