Deepfake Roundup: How Deepfake Detection Tools Protect Against Digital Deception

As deepfake technology grows more sophisticated, businesses face an alarming rise in digital fraud and impersonation. From financial scams to brand impersonation, deepfakes threaten reputations, deceive consumers, and cost companies millions. Below are three recent deepfake incidents and how deepfake detection software can play a critical role in preventing them.

1. Deepfake Video Scam Featuring Anthony Bolton

In May 2025, a convincing deepfake video surfaced showing former Fidelity International fund manager Anthony Bolton promoting a WhatsApp group offering daily stock tips. The scammers used AI-generated visuals and voice cloning to mimic Bolton, misleading retail investors with promises of high returns. Fidelity confirmed the video was entirely fraudulent and had no affiliation with Bolton or their firm.

How Detection Solutions Help:
Attestiv’s deepfake detection platform uses AI to analyze both video content and context for signs of manipulation—such as mismatched facial movements, lip-sync errors, and other synthetic cues. Financial institutions can deploy Attestiv’s tools to authenticate investor communications and prevent deepfake-driven fraud before it spreads.

2. Deepfake Impersonation of Analyst Michael Hewson

A separate attack targeted financial analyst Michael Hewson. Scammers created a deepfake video that cloned his likeness and voice, promoting a fake investment group. The fraudulent clip circulated on social media, leveraging Hewson’s credibility to attract unsuspecting investors.

How Detection Solutions Help:
Attestiv detects AI-generated impersonations through real-time video authentication and content forensics. Whether it’s public-facing media or internal Zoom meetings, businesses can use Attestiv’s tools to validate the authenticity of video communications, safeguarding brand integrity and stakeholder trust.

3. George Clooney Deepfake Used in Online Romance Scam

In a bizarre twist, scammers used a deepfake of actor George Clooney to dupe an Argentinian woman out of over $10,000. The fraudsters created a fake Facebook account and deployed AI-generated videos where “Clooney” spoke, blinked, and smiled convincingly. The realistic imagery convinced the victim to send money under the guise of a relationship.

How Detection Solutions Help:
Social engineering attacks like this can be mitigated using deepfake detection for images and videos. Attestiv’s platform evaluates visual inconsistencies, synthetic textures, and compression anomalies—enabling platforms, dating apps, and marketplaces to screen and flag manipulated media before it reaches victims.

Why Deepfake Detection Is Now a Business Necessity

  • Cybercriminals are using AI tools to impersonate executives and trusted brands.

  • Investment fraud and identity theft through deepfakes are rising sharply.

  • Traditional verification methods can’t keep up with real-time media manipulation.

Attestiv provides deepfake detection solutions that are deployable via API, browser-based UI, or integration with messaging and claims systems. Whether you’re in finance, insurance, HR, or media, Attestiv helps you detect, flag, and stop deepfake content before it causes harm.
